MADISON — State Rep. Christine Sinicki (D-Milwaukee) issued this statement today:

“Today I and the State Assembly recognized Officer Kendell I. Corder and Officer Antonio
Obregon of the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) as the 20th Assembly District’s First
Responders of the Year, in a Recognition Ceremony at the Wisconsin State Capitol.

“Officer Corder, a former Cudahy High School football player and resident of Cudahy, served
since 2019 with District 2 MPD on Milwaukee’s south side. From a young age, Kendall showed
a deep commitment to helping and looking out for others, which as an adult fully informed his
police work.

“On Thursday, June 26, 2025, Officer Corder agreed to take an extra shift on his day off, and on
that day responded to a report of shots fired. Upon arriving at the scene with another officer, both
were ambushed in an alley and shot. Kendall succumbed to his injuries three days later, on June
29, 2025, giving his life in the course of duty.

“Officer Obregon, a South Milwaukee resident and 10-year veteran of the MPD, responded to an
active shooter crisis with other officers on February 12, 2025. Officer Obregon was among the
first on scene and directly threatened by the armed suspect. Despite imminent danger, Officer
Obregon remained engaged and responded with sound tactical judgment.

“After the suspect was taken into custody, Officer Gonzales was discovered to have life-
threatening gunshot wounds. Officer Obregon immediately administered emergency medical aid without initial access to medical supplies, using his bare hands and improvised materials to
control bleeding from the officer’s chest wound. Once medical equipment arrived, he applied
sterile gauze and a chest seal, thus stabilizing the wounded officer. His rapid and skilled
response, along with that of Officers Binter, Sharp, Marx, and Kemnitz, was instrumental in
saving Officer Gonzales’s life.

“I was honored to recognize Officer Corder posthumously and Officer Obregon for his
courageous actions in February and going forward. They are the first responders who protect us
from random violence and harm. We cannot thank them enough for their service and willingness
to sacrifice personal safety in doing it.”
