Madison, WI — Representative Stroud introduced the “Student Success, Workforce Gains” Bill, a $20 million investment to help more Wisconsin students complete their degrees and enter high-demand careers. The proposal provides $10 million to the UW System and $10 million to the Wisconsin Technical College System to expand campus programs that support student retention and degree or certificate completion.
“Before being elected last year, I had the incredible fortune of being a college professor. The college I worked at was a lot like our UW campuses and our tech colleges—we had many first-generation and working-class students. In my 12 years in that career, I saw a lot of changes over time. Students increasingly came to school with more hardships, and often those were tied up with financial struggles. In the last few years, I had more and more students who had to work 20 or 30-hours a week just to pay rent while trying to keep up with their studies,” said Rep. Stroud.
“By providing students with just a little more support, by putting a little more focus on retaining them so that they complete their degrees, not only will we as a state have more social workers and nurses and engineers and doctors, but they will have achieved what is still the greatest difference maker in achieving social mobility.”
