MADISON, WI – Representative Angela Stroud (D-Ashland) joined Democratic colleagues, community organizers, justice advocates, and Mayor Jim Paine in introducing the Economic Justice Bill of Rights. The resolution codifies the right to a job that provides dignity at work and pays a living wage; the right to adequately funded public education and affordable, accessible child care; the right to unionize and collectively bargain; the right to a clean, sustainable environment; the right to safe, affordable housing, transportation, and broadband; and so much more.
Representative Stroud released the following statement:
“This resolution lays out a set of governing priorities that would allow us to address the systemic and intersecting issues of economic inequality, racial discrimination, gender inequities, and environmental crises that continue to harm the people of the 73rd and the entire state. Unfortunately, the majority party has spent the last few weeks bringing bills to the floor of the Assembly that are written solely for political purposes and that do harm to real people.
The Governor’s proposed budget is a down payment on the Bill of Rights, and I am so heartened to see that the Democratic caucus is focused on doing the people’s work. In the face of national attacks on democracy and the dismantling of our federal government, this bill puts forth a vision of a government that works on behalf of everyday people and not one that serves the interests of the ultra-wealthy or the well-connected.
My Democratic colleagues invited Mayor Paine to join the press conference, given his leadership on these issues in the City of Superior, and I was proud to hear him so forcefully defend city policies that prioritize working families and build a more equitable future for all of his constituents.
Democrats in Madison are fighting for the economic security of all Wisconsinites as a way to expand our personal and collective freedoms and to ensure the government is working for people and not corporations. It is an honor to do this work.”
