MADISON – Today, the State Assembly voted unanimously to declare May as Food Allergy Awareness Month in Wisconsin. The bipartisan resolution, introduced by Representative Lisa Subeck (D-Madison), brought lawmakers from both sides of the aisle together in support of raising awareness about the serious risks posed by food allergies.

“Millions of Americans live with food allergies every day, and for many, a simple meal can turn into a life-threatening emergency,” said Rep. Subeck. “Common foods like shellfish, milk, and nuts can be dangerous without proper labeling and awareness.”

According to a 2023 review by Food Allergy Resource and Education (FARE), more than 500,000 Wisconsinites, including nearly 95,000 children, live with food allergies. The goal of the resolution is to encourage more education and understanding around food allergies—especially when it comes to clear food labeling and preventing accidental exposure.

“By recognizing Food Allergy Awareness Month, we’re putting a spotlight on an issue that affects families across Wisconsin,” said Rep. Subeck. “I’m glad we were able to come together to support raising awareness and keeping people with dangerous food allergies safe.”

Rep. Subeck represents Wisconsin’s 79th Assembly District, which includes parts of Madison.
