Madison, Wis. – This week, the State Assembly held a floor session to vote on a series of bills related to housing.
Representative Randy Udell (D-47th District) released the following statement:
“It is no secret that Wisconsin’s housing crisis is growing worse. Our families are struggling to afford places to live, whether rental properties or first-time homes, and I am glad to support bipartisan efforts to streamline new housing construction.
“My Democratic colleagues and I proposed amendments to strengthen these bills and better meet our state’s housing needs. One of these amendments gained bipartisan support and would have freed $10 million in funds to help with affordable housing statewide. Unfortunately, after our inboxes received a Republican Senator’s childish, bright-red-font email calling the amendment’s author a communist, Assembly Republicans withdrew their support and removed the amendment.
“I hope that, one day, we will be able to tackle this complex and growing issue with the urgency and maturity it requires.”
