MADISON, Wis. — Yesterday, the Wisconsin Assembly met for 2025’s closing floor session. While Republicans proposed consolidating publics schools, Democrats attempted to force a vote on post-partum Medicaid expansion.
Representative Randy Udell (D-47th District) released the following statement:
“For decades, our Republican majority has underfunded Wisconsin’s schools. Their ‘solution’ for these funding gaps is to consolidate districts, meaning closed schools, mass layoffs, and further travel distance for students.
“To cap off the year, they used procedural tactics to prevent Post-Partum Medicaid Expansion from receiving a vote. Every state except Wisconsin and Arkansas has made this expansion, and seventy-two of Wisconsin’s ninety-nine Assembly members support it. Yet at the last minute, Republican leadership switched this bill to a new committee, which prevented our petition for a forced vote. They would rather play backroom politics than let new mothers receive healthcare.
“Education and healthcare are cornerstones of our communities, and Wisconsin deserves better.”
