MADISON–The Wisconsin Supreme Court released its decision today invalidating Wisconsin’s 1849 abortion ban. Representative Robyn Vining (D-Wauwatosa) released the following statement:

“Every Wisconsinite deserves access to high-quality and affordable healthcare. Abortion is a decision to be made by a patient and their doctor, a decision that should not be made by the government. Today’s Supreme Court decision to invalidate Wisconsin’s archaic 1849 abortion ban will protect lives and bring Wisconsin closer to restoring reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy.

“With the fall of Roe v. Wade activating Wisconsin’s archaic 1849 abortion ban, Wisconsin women and pregnant people were faced with the life-endangering and liberty-restricting loss of bodily autonomy and access to the full spectrum of healthcare. The Will of The People should be the law of the land, and Wisconsin’s 176-year-old abortion ban was not the will of the people.

“Today we took one step toward reproductive freedom–but there is still more work to be done. We must codify abortion access and reproductive rights in state law so that Wisconsin lives, families, and bodily autonomy are protected. I will continue to fight to protect the rights of my constituents, so that we can move forward, together.
