Janesville, Wis. – Representative Ann Roe (D–Janesville) and Representative Andrew Hysell (D–Sun Prairie) will host a roundtable discussion in Janesville to discuss tariffs and the impact of private school funding on property taxes. Rep. Hysell has introduced legislation aimed at improving tariff tax transparency in Wisconsin.

The public event will take place on Monday, October 13, from 4:00 p.m. – 5:30p.m. in the Program Room at Hedberg Public Library (316 S. Main St., Janesville, WI 53545).

Representative Andrew Hysell was elected to represent the 48th Assembly District after a competitive primary in 2024. The 48th Assembly District is made up of Sun Prairie and surrounding areas. Rep. Hysell is currently a practicing attorney at LawtonCates S.C. in Madison and is the ranking member on the Assembly Judiciary Committee.

According to the Budget Lab at Yale and Goldman Sachs economists “Americans are facing an average effective tariff rate of 18.6 percent—the highest since 1933—with Goldman Sachs estimating that households will bear 70 percent of these costs, or about $2,400 annually.”

At the same time, current Wisconsin Republican policies, including the 2009 decision to disconnect general school aid from inflation, have denied schools the basic funding they need.

“That’s why we are working with our Democratic colleagues on legislation to give taxpayers a clear picture of how much of their property tax bill is being siphoned away from local public schools and redirected to private schools.” Rep. Hysell said.

“As living costs rise and the job market stalls, the Tariff Tax Transparency Act will give Wisconsinites the tools they need to understand where their money is going and make the best financial decisions for their families.” Rep. Roe stated.
