SAUK PRAIRIE-A new report by A.J. Bayatpour at CBS Milwaukee details chaos at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, with a recent internal memo confirming an unprecedented – and heretofore hidden – hiring freeze and travel ban at the troubled agency.

Questions about the hidden crisis at DPI were first raised by the Jeff Wright for Wisconsin campaign last month.

“This new internal memo makes clear that Jill Underly is failing Wisconsin’s schoolchildren. There is an unprecedented crisis at the Department of Public Instruction, hidden from the public only for her political gain. This agency has never faced such financial mismanagement, resulting in hiring freezes, travel bans and other impediments to the mission of improving K-12 education in Wisconsin,” said Tyler Smith, campaign manager for grassroots DPI superintendent candidate Jeff Wright, Sauk Prairie schools superintendent.

“Wisconsin deserves answers – not CYA memos – about the mismanagement and lack of leadership at DPI,” Smith said.
