WEST BEND — Washington County Executive and candidate for Governor Josh Schoemann today announced plans to move key agencies out of Madison to make state government closer to more accountable and responsive to residents all across Wisconsin. In addition, the plan calls for selling state property in Madison and requiring state employees to return to in-person work. “It’s time to create a state government for the 21st century,” Schoemann said. “The whole state shouldn’t exist to serve the seat of state government. The government should serve the people. Moving agencies out of Madison will make the bureaucracy more responsive to the people they serve, save money, and improve the state’s economic vitality in the process.”

Schomann noted that final decisions on which agencies to relocate and to where will be subject to deliberation and negotiation with the state legislature, but possible relocation destinations could include:

  • Wausau — Department of Natural Resources
  • Wisconsin Dells or Rhinelander — Tourism
  • La Crosse — Department of Veterans Affairs
  • Green Bay — Department of Financial Institutions
  • Kenosha/Racine Area — Department of Workforce Development; Department of Children and Families
  • Stevens Point – Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection
