Bill establishing state nuclear siting study moves forward

Madison, WI — On Thursday, the Wisconsin State Senate passed a bill that takes a big step toward ensuring the state’s energy needs are met by clean and efficient nuclear energy. The bill, authored by State Senator Julian Bradley (R-New Berlin) and State Representatives Shae Sortwell (R-Two Rivers) and David Steffen (R-Howard) establishes a nuclear siting study. This will enable the state to identify opportunities for nuclear development, including the location of sites suitable for nuclear fission or fusion technologies.

“Wisconsin has to be ready to incorporate more nuclear power as soon as we’re able,” said Sen. Bradley. “This can be the advantage that helps us grow as a state and powers our economy for generations to come.”

“The Nuclear Renaissance is here. I am glad to see Wisconsin take a leadership role,” added Representative Sortwell.

There are currently two nuclear reactors operating in Wisconsin at the Point Beach Nuclear Plant in Two Rivers. These two reactors alone power over 1 million homes and make up 66.6% of the state’s carbon-free electricity and 16% of the total power used in the state.

“I’m thrilled that our siting bill has earned bi-partisan support and has such strong momentum,” said Representative Steffen.” Wisconsin can be a leader in energy innovation, and we’re taking the steps to make that potential a reality.”

The bill has already had a hearing in the Assembly, and the bill’s authors are optimistic that it will continue to progress through that house and on to the Governor’s desk.
