State Senate Passes “Gail’s Law” to Expand Access to Life-Saving Breast Cancer Screenings
Madison, Wis. — Today, the Wisconsin State Senate passed Senate Bill 264, otherwise known as “Gail’s Law,” which will expand access to breast cancer screenings for women with dense breast tissue. State Senator Rachael Cabral-Guevara (R-Fox Crossing) released the following statement.
“I am proud to lead this critical women’s health initiative, which was inspired by Gail Zeamer, a fearless woman who shared her heartbreaking story of a missed diagnosis due to dense breast tissue,” said Sen. Cabral-Guevara. “Though Gail is no longer with us, I am proud that we have passed ‘Gail’s Law’ in her honor today.”
“Gail’s Law” will ensure that women with dense breast tissue receive necessary supplemental breast cancer screenings at no cost-share. Dense breast tissue can obscure tumors on a traditional mammogram, making cancer difficult to detect for nearly 40% of women. This marks the third legislative session “Gail’s Law” has been introduced and the farthest it has advanced in the legislature.
“We have built a strong, bipartisan coalition to get this bill across the finish line. I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful advocates, families, and Gail for getting the bill to this point,” continued Sen. Cabral-Guevara. “Now, I am hopeful the Assembly will quickly pass this legislation and the Governor will sign this bill that will save money, lead to better health outcomes, and most importantly, save lives.”
