Failure to renew will result in loss of coverage, increases in healthcare costs for Wisconsinites

MADISON, WI – At midnight Tuesday, the federal government officially shut down, resulting in the furlough of thousands of federal workers in Wisconsin and disrupting programs and services nationwide because of the Republican-controlled Congress’ failure to pass a federal funding bill. At the heart of negotiations is a critical Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credit that helps healthy, middle-class customers afford care, which stabilizes the market and keeps the cost of coverage down.

“I cannot emphasize enough the importance of these tax credits. Without them, costs for everyone on the ACA marketplace are going to go up and the uninsured rate is going to spike. People are already feeling the pinch of inflation and tariffs – a rise in healthcare costs on top of that is the last thing we need,” Senator Kristin Dassler-Alfheim (D-Appleton).

“Nobody wants a government shutdown, but leaving millions of hardworking, middle-class Americans without coverage is unacceptable. This issue is too big to ignore, and I hope that it is resolved soon,” concluded the Senator.
