Madison, WI- Senate President Mary Felzkowski (R-Tomahawk) issued the following statement after the passage of SJR 2, a constitutional amendment to make Voter ID permanent in Wisconsin, on the Senate floor today:

“Showing an ID to vote is common sense and overwhelmingly popular among Wisconsinites, and I am pleased to have presided over this action on the Senate Floor,” said President Felzkowski. “Secure elections are a fundamental part of a functioning government and cannot be subject to political winds; enshrining this basic requirement in our constitution will ensure voting in Wisconsin remains secure moving forward.”

SJR 2 is the second consideration of this Voter ID amendment to pass the Senate and, pending action in the State Assembly, will be on voters’ ballots in April. Constitutional amendments in Wisconsin are required to pass the Legislature in two consecutive sessions and then are subject to approval by the voters in a statewide referendum.

“When an ID is required to drive a car, open a bank account, and even to get a library card, there is no reason why showing an ID to vote is not acceptable,” stated President Felzkowski. “Requiring Voter ID is an easy way to make sure people feel confident when they vote and ensure that the foundation of our constitutional republic is strong.”
