Madison, WI- Today, Governor Tony Evers vetoed Assembly Bill 1, legislation that would have returned Wisconsin to educational standards that Governor Evers himself implemented.

Current Department of Public Instruction Superintendent Jill Underly deviated from National Assessment of Educational Progress standards, instead choosing lower standards and cut scores to mask failing student achievement stemming from school closures that Evers and Democrats insisted on, despite not being backed by solid science. Lowering the standards has led to artificially inflated achievement levels and difficulty measuring year-over-year data.

Recently, Governor Evers criticized the process, or lack thereof, that Superintendent Underly used to change the standards, calling it a “mistake.”

Senate President Mary Felzkowski (R-Tomahawk) issued the following statement:

Every single Wisconsinite should be floored that Governor Evers just vetoed a proposal to return Wisconsin to the very same standards that he himself implemented. It’s a shocking, disappointing, and highly partisan decision that proves once again that the success of our students is not the goal of the “education governor.”

This veto is just another example of the continued hypocrisy of Democrat actions in our state. They will stop at nothing to retain power. I do not think it is a coincidence that the governor vetoed a return to his own standards only four days before the election for state superintendent, in which Underly’s name is on the ballot.

Wisconsin students and parents deserve better than political games from the governor.
