Today, Senate Democratic Leader Dianne Hesselbein (D-Middleton) appointed Senator Tim Carpenter (D-Milwaukee) to the Council on Human Trafficking.
Created with bi-partisan support and signed into law by Governor Evers in March 2024, the 23-member Council will be housed within the Wisconsin Department of Justice. Among the Council’s responsibilities will be compiling and maintaining information and data, developing model training and a state strategic plan to prevent human trafficking, assessing sex trafficking activities in Wisconsin Counties, and making recommendations to establish county-level human trafficking task forces.
Senator Hesselbein and Senator Carpenter released the following statements:
Senator Hesselbein
“Human trafficking is, unfortunately, a reality in rural and urban neighborhoods and communities across Wisconsin. To attack this appalling crime, the Council will create a more complete picture of trafficking in Wisconsin and encourage collaboration and coordinated efforts. I am pleased to appoint Senator Carpenter to serve and I know he will make valuable contributions to the work of this important Council.”
Senator Carpenter
“I look forward to serving on the Wisconsin Human Trafficking Council, and the opportunity to be part of the solution to this terrible crime. I am sad to say that our state is 6th in the nation when it comes to instances of human trafficking. We must take bold action to address this situation. I am hopeful that the council can be a helpful resource to law enforcement and local governments across the state as we all work together to end human trafficking.”
