Madison- Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu (R-Oostburg) issued the following statement after the Senate passed SJR 2 today:

“Having voters show a photo ID is a commonsense way to make sure that every vote counts. Enshrining Voter ID requirements in the constitution will secure Wisconsin elections and make sure that it is easy to vote and hard to cheat.

“You need a photo ID to get married, pick up some medications, open a bank account, buy alcohol, rent or buy a house, and even adopt a pet from the humane society. We have to make sure that voting stays on the long list of things you need a photo ID to do.”

Wisconsin has seen record turnout since its statutory Voter ID requirement was implemented. In the 2024 election, Wisconsin saw its highest statewide raw vote total ever, nearly its highest statewide percentage turnout ever (about 73%), and Milwaukee had the highest turnout of any of the largest 50 U.S. cities.
