MADISON – Senator Jeff Smith (D-Brunswick) and Representative Ann Roe (D-Janesville) introduced the Wisconsin Opportunity Act, a comprehensive package of policies designed to address the root causes of poverty by expanding access to affordable housing, family-supporting jobs, transportation, and other essential services across Wisconsin.

“Every Wisconsinite deserves the opportunity to build a better life,” said Sen. Jeff Smith. “We must address the barriers keeping people in poverty and this bill tackles those barriers head-on by investing in our people, families and communities.”

“As life gets harder, the majority party continues to turn a blind eye as they stand in judgment of the poorest and the most vulnerable members of our community,” said Rep. Ann Roe. “No one chooses to be poor. Kids don’t choose to be hungry or without a safe place to live. It’s time for my colleagues to stop judging and invest in solutions.”

“Between rising costs and federal cuts to critical services, too many Wisconsin families are on the brink of financial crisis,” said Rep. Lisa Subeck. “The Wisconsin Opportunity Act makes needed investments in proven programs to ensure every Wisconsinite has access to a good job, stable housing, and the opportunity to get ahead.”

The Wisconsin Opportunity Act makes significant investments to help families achieve stability and independence, including:

  • Affordable Housing and Homelessness Prevention
  • Workforce Development and Job Access
  • Civil Legal Services for Low-Income Wisconsinites
  • Community Action and Local Support
  • Health, Environment, and Infrastructure
  • Transportation and Internet Access
