MADISON – Today, the Wisconsin Supreme Court issued its ruling in Tony Evers v. Howard Marklein, overturning the State Legislature’s power to suspend administrative rules and ensuring that Wisconsin’s ban on the harmful and discredited practice of so-called “conversion therapy” will no longer be subject to legislative interference. After that ruling, the LGBTQ+ Caucus released the following statement:
“Today’s ruling confirms our state’s separation of powers and ensures that LGBTQ+ people are not subjected to practices that Wisconsin’s own mental health experts know are deeply harmful and unethical. This ruling puts an end to years of efforts by Republicans in the Legislature who have repeatedly blocked rules from the Marriage and Family Therapy, Professional Counseling, and Social Work Examining Board from coming into effect.
“It is a victory against the abusive and discredited practice of ‘conversion therapy’ and a victory for LGBTQ+ people who want to live as their authentic selves.”
