MADISON – Today, the Supreme Court of the United States issued its ruling in United States V. Skrmetti, upholding Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors as constitutional. After that ruling, the LGBTQ+ Caucus released the following statement:
“Gender-affirming care is safe, medically necessary, and saves lives. Legislators should not interfere in private decisions that belong in the hands of patients, their doctors, and their parents. Preventing doctors from providing life-saving, medically necessary care to their transgender and nonbinary patients is deeply harmful, cruel, and dangerous. This decision by the US Supreme Court sets a dangerous precedent, abandoning transgender children and their families to political games and discrimination that will reverberate across the country.
“While today’s SCOTUS decision does not change the legal status of gender-affirming care access for youth in Wisconsin, it sends a harmful message to transgender and non-binary youth, their families, and communities.”
“We should be telling transgender and non-binary youth, and their families, that they are seen, are loved, and that they belong here in Wisconsin, and across the country, as their authentic selves. This court ruling does not change that.”
“As a caucus, we will continue to work with our allies to fight for the dignity and freedoms of transgender and non-binary youth, their families, and communities across Wisconsin.”
