MADISON – Senator Eric Wimberger (R-Oconto) released the following statement after voting in favor of Senate Joint Resolution 2, an initiative to place a question on the spring ballot enshrining voter ID requirements in the Wisconsin State Constitution, during Wednesday’s floor session:
“By passing Senate Joint Resolution 2 today, the Senate did its part to add a constitutional protection to the integrity of Wisconsin’s elections. Voters should be able to take comfort in knowing that only eligible voters are participating in Wisconsin’s elections.
ID requirements are already required for many facets of daily life. You need a valid ID to drive a car, board an airplane, or pick up prescriptions at the pharmacy. For something as critical as protecting the security of our elections, asking someone to verify they are who they are before casting a vote should be a common-sense bipartisan issue.
Requiring a valid ID to vote remains a widely popular policy position, with nearly 80% of Americans supporting voter ID laws. This spring, Wisconsinites will be able to codify this policy in the State Constitution, preventing a liberal Supreme court from legislating from the bench to get its desired policy outcome yet again. I am confident that the people of this state will side with common sense, just like they did this fall with the passage of two election security amendments, including the ‘Zuckerbucks’ amendment I authored.”
