Madison – This morning, Wisconsin Legislative Democrats announced legislation that provides funding for student advising and support to ensure students are able to stick with their programs and graduate, and opens the door for students of all income levels to attend UW schools.
“Our own UW-Parkside has traditionally enrolled the highest number of first-generation college students, like myself,” Senator Robert Wirch (D-Pleasant Prairie) said. “UW-Parkside prioritizes the needs of first-generation students and their families, and this legislation will allow the school to continue to work with students to ensure their success. This legislation also ensures in-state students from families making $71,000 or less are able to attend a UW institution without worrying about the financial burden or incurring debt.”
The package also includes a bill that would restore collective bargaining rights to the employees and faculty of the Universities of Wisconsin, excluding employees who are involved in the ongoing Act 10 litigation.
“In any profession, being able to advocate for better wages and working conditions is vital to employee well-being and success on the job. Protecting the rights of University employees to collectively bargain is a win for faculty, the students they teach, and the communities that benefit from their expertise,” said Wirch.
