Madison, WI – Today, Senate President Mary Felzkowski (R-Tomahawk), Representative Amanda Nedweski (R-Pleasant Prairie), Senator Julian Bradley (R-New Berlin), and Representative Scott Allen (R-Waukesha) introduced legislation to ensure that Wisconsin students receive comprehensive education on pregnancy, prenatal development, and childbirth as part of standard human growth and development instruction.
The legislation requires that curricula include age-appropriate ultrasounds showing fetal development throughout pregnancy, details of organ development at different stages of pregnancy, and information on the physical and emotional health of the mother during pregnancy. Requirements also include explanations of the importance of secure intrapersonal relationships for infant mental health and the value of reading to young children for mental development.
“In today’s world, where information is abundant but often incomplete or misleading, it’s essential that Wisconsin youth receive accurate information about pregnancy and parenthood,” said Senator Felzkowski. “This bill provides students with age-appropriate, science-based instruction to give them a full picture of prenatal development and empower them as they navigate life’s important moments.”
“By teaching students about the physical and emotional journey mothers experience during pregnancy, we help them better understand the profound responsibility that comes with parenthood,” said Representative Nedweski. “This bill’s focus on child development and maternal health fosters not only knowledge, but also compassion in our students.”
“Recent brain science shows how crucial the first five years of life are,” said Representative Allen. “Secure interpersonal relationships are key to building the foundation for success. Our young people should have the benefit of this information.”
“When students learn about the incredible journey of life before birth, they begin to see the humanity in every child,” said Senator Bradley. “That’s what this bill is all about.”
