Medicaid funding provides healthcare and support services to individuals with disabilities, seniors, children who need help in school, families who care for a loved one at home, and many others. The U.S. House Energy and Commerce committee has released the legislative text which includes ideas that would shift some costs to states, make changes that could impact who can get into Medicaid, what benefits are covered, and how much small businesses are paid for health and long-term care services.
The Congressional Budget Office’s initial estimate is that these Medicaid cuts will reduce federal Medicaid spending by at least $715 billion, and at least 13.7 million people losing health insurance. These numbers could increase as more details are known.
The Religious Leaders Caucus of SOPHIA (RLC) is opposed to these cuts and changes to the Medicaid program since it will deeply affect those who have the most serious need and disrupt services that provide life-changing support. The RLC urges Congress to continue to fully fund and protect Medicaid services.
