Madison, Wisconsin (Aug. 1, 2025) – Justice Susan Crawford was sworn in during a public ceremony at the state Capitol Rotunda on Friday, August 1, 2025, marking her formal introduction as the newest member of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
Crawford was elected April 1 to a 10-year term on the Supreme Court to the seat formerly held by Chief Justice Ann Walsh Bradley, who retired upon the end of her term on July 31.
Crawford previously served as a circuit court judge in Dane County, where she was first elected in 2018 and re- elected in 2024. During her time on the circuit court bench, she presided over a wide range of cases and served on several statewide judicial committees, including the Wisconsin Judicial Education Committee, the Wisconsin Judicial Conference Executive Committee, and the Wisconsin Supreme Court “Making the Record” Committee.
Before becoming a judge, Crawford worked as a civil litigator in private practice and served as chief legal counsel for the Office of Governor Jim Doyle. She also held appointed positions in several state agencies. She began her legal career as an assistant attorney general, first in the Iowa Attorney General’s Office and subsequently at the Wisconsin Department of Justice, where she directed the criminal appeals unit.
A native of Chippewa Falls, Crawford earned her undergraduate degree from Lawrence University with honors and Phi Beta Kappa recognition. She received a master’s degree in English from Indiana University and earned her law degree with high honors from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1994.
