WAUSAU, WI – Today, Congressman Tom Tiffany (WI-07) issued the following statement after the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians relented on their unlawful road closures and a federal judge ordered the Biden administration to “take immediate action to prevent an effort by anyone to restrict access” to the roads in question. The order comes after a previous ruling directed that the roads should not be restricted.
“This is the second time that the courts have ruled against President Biden’s Department of Justice, who illegally colluded with the Tribe to coerce the town of Lac du Flambeau into paying millions of dollars in ransom to keep these vital roads open. Moving forward, any potential settlement should fully compensate the town, which was victimized by this unlawful extortion racket, including any associated legal fees. The DOJ’s participation in this scheme must not go unpunished, and they must be held accountable to ensure that the residents of Lac du Flambeau are never denied access to essential roads again.”
