WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the House of Representatives voted to pass Congressman Tony Wied’s legislation, the Destroying Unnecessary, Misaligned, and Prohibitive (DUMP) Red Tape Act.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, but they often lack the time and resources to navigate complex regulatory frameworks,” said Congressman Wied. “As a former small business owner, I know firsthand how burdensome regulations can make it harder for businesses to operate and turn a profit. I’m very proud to see the House pass my bill, the DUMP Red Tape Act, to give small business owners a direct line to make their voices heard, report unnecessary regulations, and ensure those complaints are documented and reviewed so Congress can take action.”

The DUMP Red Tape Act will create a dedicated hotline for small business owners to report overly burdensome or unnecessary federal regulations to the Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Advocacy.

Background: During the last four years, the United States saw an unprecedented surge in federal regulations instituted under the Biden Administration. A 2024 report by the House Committee on Oversight found that the Biden Administration added an astonishing $1.7 trillion in new regulatory costs during their time in office. This added over 300 million regulatory paperwork hours, created unnecessary hurdles for small business owners to overcome, and made it more difficult to maintain and grow their businesses. The Trump Administration and House Republicans are committed to working to remove red tape and ease the burden on small businesses and consumers.

The DUMP Red Tape Act directs the Chief Counsel for Advocacy at the Small Business Administration (SBA) to create a “Red Tape Hotline,” that will be accessible via email, web form, or phone. The “Red Tape Hotline” will provide annual reports to Congress detailing frequently cited problematic rules, affected industries and geographic regions, recommendations for agency reform, and actions taken by the Chief Counsel to alleviate these obstacles.

By offering a streamlined and responsive feedback loop, this bill promotes cutting red tape and limiting regulations by highlighting rules in need of reform, strengthening transparency across federal agencies, and elevating the voice of small business owners, ensuring the government remains accountable and adaptive.

Congressman Wied is proud to have the support of both the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Associated Builders and Contractors.
