April 4th Event Connects Global Biodiversity Loss to Human Health and Wisconsin-Based Solutions
Madison, WI — April 4, 2025. The UW Madison Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies and Physicians for Social Responsibility Wisconsin (PSR WI) will co-host Remembrance of Lost Species, a public program examining how global biodiversity loss affects human health.
The event will feature leading UW Madison experts and physicians discussing drivers of species loss, its health consequences, and innovative efforts underway in Wisconsin and beyond. Speakers include:
- Paul Robbins, PhD – Dean, UW Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies
- Dekila Chungyalpa – Director, UW Loka Initiative
- Zuzana Burivalova, PhD – UW Department of Forestry
- Jon Pauli, PhD – Professor of Wildlife Ecology, UW–Madison
- Jonathan Patz, MD, MPH – Director and PI, Center for Health, Energy and Environmental Research (CHEER)
- Claire Gervais, MD – Wisconsin Environmental Health Network (WEHN)
- Ann Behrmann, MD – Physicians for Social Responsibility Wisconsin (PSR-WI)
This Madison event is part of the annual international Remembrance Day for Lost Species, when communities worldwide reflect on vanished species and renew commitments to protect biodiversity.
“Biodiversity loss is not just an environmental issue; it’s a public health issue,” said Marta Karlov, Executive Director of PSR Wisconsin. “This event brings science, medicine, and community together to imagine a healthier and more sustainable future.”
The event will be held on Thursday, April 4th, from 6:15p-9p at Science Hall, 550 North Park Street.
