(Milwaukee, May 5th, 2025)—On May 1 and 2, Voces de la Frontera organized two days of action in Milwaukee and the State Capitol in Madison, which brought thousands of immigrant workers, students, families, and allies into the streets to march for immigrant and worker rights. The May Day mobilizations highlighted the strength of a growing movement demanding a future rooted in workers’ rights, solidarity, and the fight for democracy.

The recent threat by White House immigration enforcement official Tom Homan, suggesting the arrest of Governor Tony Evers for issuing lawful guidance to state employees regarding interactions with ICE, is a baseless and dangerous abuse of federal power. This threat, alongside the recent arrest of Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan under circumstances widely seen as politically motivated, reflects a disturbing pattern: the escalation of authoritarian tactics to intimidate public officials who defend constitutional rights, democratic norms, and immigrant rights.

Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera, stated:

“We applaud Governor Evers’ unapologetic, principled, and courageous defense of our constitutional rights and the dignity of immigrant working-class families who call Wisconsin home. The baseless and outrageous threat against him reflects a dangerous effort to criminalize those who uphold our fundamental freedoms. We stand in unwavering solidarity with Governor Evers and all who defend justice and democracy.”

The last two May Day mobilizations in Wisconsin represent a growing united front of working people and a timely response to this abuse of power. State Republicans in Wisconsin who echo these threats are making a wrong political calculation.

Forward, for Wisconsin!
