Hi, I’m Representative Chanz Green and I represent the 74 th Assembly District in Northern Wisconsin. Today I want to talk to you about the recent audit that came out in regards to the DNR’s Fish and Wildlife Account.
The DNR claimed that they were going to be $16 million in the hole via the Fish and Wildlife Account even though we recently gave them $25 million boost. This intrigued many in the state legislature and because of this we requested an audit of the Fish and Wildlife Account last July. Earlier last week, the nonpartisan Legislative Audit Bureau came back with their findings.
They found that less than 50 % of the budget was actually directly benefiting hunters and anglers. This is upsetting because it directly contradicts the purpose of the Account in the first place. Something obviously needs to be done and the Legislative Audit Bureau provided some suggestions.
These suggestions included a transparent written process of their finances, general oversight of the Fish and Wildlife Account, clear staff responsibility for approving any changes and improving staff oversight as this is clearly an issue.
The DNR needs to be better and this can be seen through the recommendations and reporting of the nonpartisan Legislative Audit Bureau.
Thank you for your time and have a great rest of the week!
