As Gov. Tony Evers gave his budget address last week, it felt just like watching the film “Groundhog Day” where Bill Murray relives the same scenario over and over again.
True to form, the budget proposal that Gov. Evers unveiled includes excessive spending, a massive amount of non-fiscal policy items – like changing the definition of mother to inseminated person – and a considerable growth in government. What does that mean for the residents of the great state of Wisconsin? A financial disaster of epic proportions.
According to reports, Gov. Evers’ reckless proposed budget would increase spending by nearly 20 percent and turn our state’s $4.3 billion surplus into a $4 billion shortfall. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, however, since the governor’s 2023-25 budget proposal would have taken our $7 billion surplus and turned it into a $3 billion deficit.
It’s also worth mentioning that in our current budget, the governor vetoed 95 percent of the tax cuts that were passed by the Legislature.
We cannot, and will not, let Gov. Evers take Wisconsin backwards and tax you out of your homes.
Just as we have done in recent sessions, Legislative Republicans are up to the task of crafting a responsible and balanced budget that will make key investments in our state while providing significant relief to taxpayers and those hit hardest by inflation.
If we want Wisconsin to grow into the future and continue to move in the right direction, we must have a tax climate that encourages our state to be competitive.
Legislative Republicans are going to stay strong and firm and not allow Gov. Evers to Minnesota our Wisconsin.
