Since the founding of our nation, more than 1.3 million Americans have paid the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedoms. Ordinary men and women, like you and I, who made an extraordinary sacrifice. On Monday, Memorial Day, we honor, them and their families.

Freedom isn’t free. It’s earned and defended by the brave—and handed down to each generation with the hope that we’ll remember what it cost.

Since the inception of our country, each fallen hero stood for something bigger than themselves: the American Idea – Life. Liberty. The pursuit of happiness. Those same ideals endure for us today, because the heroes of yesterday put their lives on the line for them.

In the face of today’s division, Memorial Day is a reminder of what unites us—our shared gratitude for those who gave their lives so that we may live in a free county, with the right to pursue the American Dream. Let’s carry forward, the legacy of what they died to protect.

So let me end by simply saying: Thank you to our fallen heroes and their families. Our nation is forever in your debt.
