In mid December, Ms. Brittany Kinser announced her candidacy for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. At the time, various communication outlets reported that Ms. Kinser was the co-founder of Wisconsin Reads, a nonprofit group that advocates for evidence-based reading instruction.
Ms. Kinser has been using the name Wisconsin Reads to identify one of the services offered by her consulting business, Kinser Consulting, LLC. Wisconsin Reads is not a registered nonprofit group in Wisconsin. Unfortunately, her business has become confused with WI Reads, a Wisconsin nonprofit established in 2007 with the mission of increasing awareness and implementation of evidence-based literacy practices and the Science of Reading. According to Jacalyn Weissenburger, Ph.D., current President of WI Reads, Ms. Kinser is not a co-founder of WI Reads and has not been affiliated in any capacity with that nonprofit organization.
Ms. Kinser has assured WI Reads that she will change the name of her services and informational website to avoid misinterpretation and confusion while she seeks the state-level position.
