CLINTONVILLE, Wis. – The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Clintonville Federal Savings and Loan Association Building in the National Register of Historic Places on January 16, 2025. The building was originally constructed in 1965 as the new modern location for the bank in Clintonville, Waupaca County.

The Clintonville Federal Savings and Loan Association Building is locally significant in the area of architecture as an outstanding and intact example of the Modern Movement. The building is asymmetrical, circular and horizontal in character, capped by a flat roof with wide eaves and circular parapets that extend from the roofline. The use of glass is expressed with floor-to-ceiling windows that curve around sections of the building, interspersed with a fieldstone veneer, concrete, and wood. Designed by Green Bay architect Quentin Hofman and built in 1965, this building is a distinct representation of a mid-20th century financial institution.

Seeking to project a more accessible image during the period of prosperity following World War II, many banks utilized glass window walls in their design like a retail store. On their interiors, they favored open floor plans, sweeping staircases with open treads, and prominently displayed vaults. By 1960, financial institutions began embracing unique building shapes in the design of their buildings, which is reflected in the composition of this building with intersecting circular sections within an overall circular form.
