The Wisconsin Laborers’ District Council and its five affiliated local unions have announced their support for the proposed QTS data center in DeForest. This project is a $12 billion investment that will create over 5,000 great-paying construction jobs over the next decade.
“This proposed data center is a significant and long-term investment that will contribute to DeForest’s growth,” said Kent Miller, President/Business Manager of the Wisconsin Laborers’ District Council. “This is similar to the long-term investment in the community that our union made over 20 years ago, when LIUNA Wisconsin built our Apprenticeship & Training Center in DeForest off of Hwy 19 on LIUNA Way.”
“Some opponents of this project might label the jobs that are being created for LIUNA members and other trades as ‘temporary,’ but that is just additional misinformation. Our skilled members work project-to-project to put together a career to support their families, and this project will result in years of work that will result in workers earning great wages, health, and retirement benefits.”
Alliant Energy and QTS have announced plans for 750 MW of renewable energy generation, comprising wind and solar sources. “This will result in additional work for LIUNA Wisconsin members and other building trades, thanks to Alliant’s pledge to use union labor for renewable energy projects, and it will help accelerate our state’s efforts to generate power from renewable sources,” concluded Miller.
The Wisconsin Laborers’ District Council is an affiliation of five Laborer local unions, representing over 9,200 skilled construction craft laborers throughout Wisconsin. The Laborers are the most diverse trade in the construction industry, servicing employers in transportation infrastructure, building, sewer and water, utility distribution, demolition, asbestos removal, and related sectors.
