Milwaukee, Wisconsin — November 20, 2025 — The Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance (WMCA) strongly condemns Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s reckless and baseless attack on the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and its Texas chapter. His attempt to smear and delegitimize a respected civil rights organization is a dangerous escalation at a time when anti-Muslim rhetoric is sharply rising across the country.
Labeling a long-standing American civil rights organization as a “terrorist group” without evidence is not only false — it is a grave misuse of political power. This kind of inflammatory rhetoric undermines constitutional protections, endangers Muslim communities, and sets a chilling precedent in which elected officials can target nonprofit organizations simply for advocating for justice.
Efforts to unilaterally criminalize or ban an American civil rights organization threaten the bedrock democratic values that safeguard every community: civil liberties, religious freedom, free speech, and the right to organize.
For more than three decades, CAIR has served as a vital defender of constitutional rights, standing against discrimination, supporting vulnerable communities, and advocating for equal justice. Attempts to silence organizations that speak up for marginalized communities harm not only American Muslims — they harm every group that relies on civil rights protections.
“When elected officials weaponize their office to target civil rights groups, they endanger the freedoms of all Americans,” said Fauzia Qureshi, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance. “Our community will not be intimidated, and we will continue to defend the democratic values that protect every one of us.”
Governor Abbott’s actions are not just an attack on CAIR; they are an attack on nonprofit advocacy, civic engagement, and the fundamental protections that allow communities to participate fully in American public life.
WMCA Stands in Solidarity
The Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance stands firmly with CAIR, CAIR-Texas, and Muslim communities across the nation. We call on Wisconsin lawmakers, civic leaders, and faith communities to reject this dangerous precedent and to reaffirm their commitment to the safety, dignity, and civil rights of all.
