MADISON, WI – Today, Robyn Vining (AD-13), candidate for Wisconsin’s 5th Senate District, introduced a bill that would allow local governments’ to prioritize companies with fair labor practices. For the last 8 years, the Republican controlled legislature has required local officials to turn a blind eye to the labor practices of the companies they employ. This in no way aligns with the values of hardworking Wisconsinites and their rightful demands to be treated with dignity by those who rely on their labor.
Current 5th district Senator, Rob Hutton, has a long history of valuing corporations over Wisconsin workers. In 2017, Wisconsin Republicans passed Senate Bill 3, introduced by then assembly member Hutton, which barred state or local governments from requiring – or even considering – a company’s union status when evaluating bids for contract work.
Rep. Robyn Vining’s bill gives local leaders the power to make contracting decisions that reflect Wisconsinites’ values. It represents a shift toward holding companies accountable to the public and away from Sen. Hutton’s prioritization of private profit.
“Senator Hutton has made a career of slashing wages, victimizing labor unions, and choosing private profit over the people who move Wisconsin forward. The contrast between Hutton and Representative Robyn Vining could not be more clear – as Robyn has demonstrated again with this bill, she will always stand up for hardworking Wisconsinites,” said SSDC Communications Director, Will Karcz. “Higher wages and fair labor practices should be top of mind for our elected officials, and that is why next year Wisconsin voters will retire Rob Hutton and elect Robyn Vining the next Senator for the 5th district.”
