MADISON, Wis. — Reveling in his recent endorsement by Wisconsin’s leading anti-abortion group Pro-Life Wisconsin, extreme right-wing politician Brad Schimel is back boasting of his own anti-abortion bona fides to anyone who will listen.
In new audio uncovered by Heartland Signal, Brad Schimel complained that Wisconsinites objected to the loss of their reproductive freedom, reiterated that he believes life begins at conception, and told supporters “we need to shut this issue down.”
Brad Schimel’s latest foray into anti-abortion activism comes on the heels of the extreme anti-abortion group Pro-Life Wisconsin telling supporters that the “easiest road” to enacting a total abortion ban in Wisconsin “will be to elect Brad Schimel to the state supreme court.” Pro-Life Wisconsin notably only endorses candidates who agree “there may never be legal exceptions” to bans on abortion and who hold a “100 percent” anti-abortion position.
Here’s a recap of Brad Schimel’s lengthy anti-abortion agenda:
- Brad Schimel said it would be a “sham” if the Wisconsin Supreme Court didn’t ban abortion, asserting that “there is not a constitutional right to abortion” in Wisconsin.
- Brad Schimel called Wisconsin’s 1849 criminal abortion ban that doesn’t include exceptions for rape or incest “valid” and claimed there was nothing to make the law invalid.
- Brad Schimel and his top aides worked with right-wing legal groups to end reproductive freedom nationwide, even working to keep it a secret that he and his staff attended a conference hosted by a far-right hate group where the successful legal strategy to overturn Roewas hatched.
- Brad Schimel wasted over $1 million in taxpayer dollars suing to enforce new restrictions on abortion care in Wisconsin.
- Brad Schimel said it was an “honor to have a case named Planned Parenthood v. Schimel.”
- Brad Schimel signed onto a legal white paper as Waukesha County District Attorney agreeing that Wisconsin’s 1849 criminal abortion ban should be enforced if Roe v. Wade was struck down.
“This new audio only proves what Wisconsin has known all along: Brad Schimel is an extreme anti-aborton activist incapable of being impartial or fair when it comes to reproductive freedom,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Deputy Communications Director Haley McCoy. “Wisconsinites don’t take threats to their reproductive freedoms lightly, and they’ll vote to reject Brad Schimel and his anti-abortion agenda in April.”
