MADISON, Wis. — With health care premiums set to more than double for working families, Derrick Van Orden is dismissing continued funding as “partisan demands” while Tom Tiffany is directing Republican colleagues to “hold firm” in their position that could raise health care costs for Wisconsinites. Republicans have fought against affordable health care at every turn, and their government shutdown is a prime opportunity to reach their long-sought goal of leaving their constituents to face soaring medical costs.
“Derrick Van Orden and Tom Tiffany are clear on their priorities—cut health care for everyday people to pay for Elon Musk’s billionaire tax breaks,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Communications Director Philip Shulman. “Wisconsin Republicans have been working for these cuts for so long it’s hard to imagine they’re not clinking glasses and sipping champagne at the thought of sticking their constituents with the bill.”
Take a quick look at Derrick Van Orden and Tom Tiffany’s long history of work to rip health care from Wisconsinites:
Derrick Van Orden:
- Derrick Van Orden was a key vote in passing the GOP’s Big Ugly Bill, which could rip health care away from over 32,000 of his constituents and put a rural hospital at risk of closing in his district.
- After voting for and celebrating these cuts, Van Orden tried to save face by lying, claiming that he secured additional funding for Wisconsin’s Medicaid program.
- Derrick Van Orden supports the full repeal of the Affordable Care Act, which would threaten affordable health insurance coverage for over 313,000 Wisconsinites who are currently enrolled in an ACA insurance plan.
- Van Orden’s campaign website once called for “the last vestiges of the disastrous Obamacare” to be removed.
- Van Orden voted in favor of the Limit, Save, Grow Act, which would have limited health care access for 116,600 veterans.
Tom Tiffany:
- When asked about continuing to fund health care during an interview about the government shutdown, Tom Tiffany replied, “We can’t do that.”
- Tom Tiffany helped write a plan that would raise the age of eligibility for Medicare and Social Security, privatize Social Security, and turn Medicare into a voucher system. Tiffany said separately that he supports raising the retirement age.
- In 2025, Tiffany cosponsored a bill to completely repeal the Inflation Reduction Act which capped out-of-pocket prescription drug copayments and saved Medicare subscribers up to an average of $2,500 per year in healthcare costs.
- Tiffany has said that the Affordable Care Act has “harmed the rest of America.” Over 313,000 Wisconsinites are currently enrolled in an ACA insurance plan.
