MADISON-Jeff Wright, the grassroots candidate for Wisconsin schools superintendent, said Tuesday that lack of collaboration and transparency created the conditions for a new piece of legislation to reform testing policies at the Department of Public Instruction.
Following is Wright’s statement regarding LRB 0976:
“The changes in our state standards came at the worst possible time, with districts still assessing student progress post-COVID. Wisconsin needs to set high standards for its students. Even Gov. Evers called the current State Superintendent’s lowering of standards a mistake in a clear rebuke of the current administration. While I support the objectives of this bill, it’s unfortunate that the Legislature has to step in.
“This is happening because of the absence of system-wide collaboration and open communication. I look forward to working with our Legislature as a nonpartisan problem solver to do what is right for our schools.”
