Milwaukee, WI – On Monday, March, 30 2026, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers followed the President of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, Salah Sarsour, surrounded, and detained him. He was subsequently transferred to an out-of-state ICE detention facility.
Sarsour is a thirty-two year resident of Milwaukee and a legal permanent resident of the United States. Sarsour is both Palestinian and Muslim, a respected leader in his community; the federal government has given no reason for his detention by ICE.
We, the Executive Board of the American Federation of Teachers, Local 212, condemn this extra-judicial abduction of one of our fellow community members and call for his immediate release.
We stand with Mr. Sarsour, his family, and the Muslim and Palestinian communities.
