New reporting from Heartland Signal raises serious questions about conservative Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Maria Lazar’s claim that “you can’t buy this court” — as multiple billionaires have maxed out donations to her campaign.
At a Jan. 28 forum, Lazar brushed off concerns about wealthy donors, joking she “wished” she were friends with billionaires. But campaign finance records show her campaign is heavily fueled by maximum contributions from some of the wealthiest conservative donors in the country.
Among them:
- Diane Hendricks, Wisconsin’s wealthiest billionaire and co-founder of ABC Supply, worth an estimated $22.3 billion.
- Elizabeth Uihlein, heir to the Schlitz brewing fortune and co-owner of Uline, whose family has poured hundreds of millions into conservative candidates and PACs.
- Tim Schmidt, chairman of the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA), a major gun rights organization.
Lazar’s campaign relies heavily on wealthy donors. The report shows that only 3.7% ($438,835) of her total fundraising came from small-dollar donations under $200.
The fundraising totals add new context to Lazar’s remarks about billionaire influence, particularly given the contrast between her comments and the source of much of her campaign’s financial support.
