EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Today, students at the University of Eau-Claire, along with State Sen. Jeff Smith, Americans for Contraception and The Wisco Project, gathered signatures on a giant postcard addressed to Congressman Derrick Van Orden, urging him to support the Right to Contraception Act in Congress. The postcard was later delivered to Rep. Van Orden’s Eau Claire office.
Introduced shortly after the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision in 2022, The Right to Contraception Act would ensure individuals have a statutory right to access all forms of contraception, and it would prohibit any local, state or federal government entity from limiting or interfering with these rights with laws that single out or impede provision of or access to contraceptives or related information or services. In addition, the legislation safeguards health care providers’ ability to prescribe contraceptives, and ensures the federal government could not block individuals from helping others obtain contraceptives.
“Health care decisions, including contraception, belong between you and your health care provider – not politicians,” said Sen. Smith. “I am proud to support the Right to Contraception Act in the Wisconsin Legislature and I urge Rep. Van Orden to do the same at the federal level.”
“Contraception is health care, and for decades, birth control and other forms of contraception have been a routine aspect of how Americans plan their futures and protect their health,” said Morgan Grunow, spokesperson for Americans for Contraception. “The Right to Contraception Act would ensure that access to contraception is protected and universally available.”
“College students don’t need politicians micromanaging their health decisions — freedom means making your own choices, and that includes access to contraception,” said Alex Teodorescu, state director of The Wisco Project. “Today we are urging Rep. Van Orden to Pass the Right to Contraception Act so students in Wisconsin and across the country have access to the health care they need.”
