MENASHA, Wis. — On Thursday, September 10 at 6:30pm at Neenah City Hall, the League of Women Voters (LWV) Winnebago County Chapter will host a debate for candidates running for state representative in Assembly District 53, but Republican candidate David Daniels will be conspicuously absent.
Despite receiving an invitation from the nonpartisan LWV, Daniels declined to participate. Democratic candidate Becky Nichols, a public school teacher who served on the Menasha City Council and Winnebago County Board, is confirmed to participate in the event with Trump-aligned independent candidate Rachael Dowling.
“Dodging a debate is disqualifying and a disservice to the voters a candidate seeks to represent,” said Matt Roznowski, Press Secretary for the Wisconsin Assembly Democratic Campaign Committee (ADCC). “Republican David Daniels still has an opportunity to do right by the voters and debate his opponents, but don’t hold your breath. With extreme views like banning abortion at just six weeks and being a rubber stamp for Donald Trump’s cost-raising agenda, it’s no surprise Daniels doesn’t want to go on the record and answer tough questions.”
