Raymond, WI — Tonight, ER Nurse Mitchell Berman won the Democratic nomination for Wisconsin’s First Congressional District. Berman, a working class candidate who lives in rural Racine County with his wife and two daughters, has campaigned on a message of bringing down the cost of living, fixing a broken healthcare system, and ending corruption in Washington.
Berman issued the following statement:
“To everyone who is ready for new leadership, believes in our message, and cast a vote in this election: thank you. I never imagined running for Congress, but I saw a culture of corruption in Washington that protects corporate special interests and insiders instead of solving problems, and knew I had to do something about it. Tonight proves that when working people stand up, we can make a difference. This is our victory — and it is just the beginning of the fight to bring back real representation back to our district in Washington by beating Bryan Steil.”
Berman, an emergency room nurse who spent a decade at the Department of Veterans Affairs, is a union nurse and has been a union member at every organized facility where he has worked. He is running to unseat four-term incumbent Bryan Steil, who has made healthcare more expensive for Wisconsin, passing the largest Medicaid cuts in history, opposing extending expiring ACA subsidies, and siding with the drug and insurance industries that have given him nearly $1.2 million over working families at every opportunity.

Wisconsin’s First Congressional District is a toss-up district in the battle for control of the House this year. The district is rated R+2 by Cook Political Report and in recent Wisconsin state Supreme Court elections it has been carried handily by the liberal justices.
