Brown County Celebrates America 250 with History Telling Plaque
(Brown County, Wis.) – Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach, along with Parks Director Matt Kriese and the Wisconsin Society Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), held a dedication ceremony as part of its celebration of America 250 for a new Liberty Tree.
“This momentous year has brought out the best in our community to help celebrate America’s 250th birthday and this is another way Brown County is paying tribute to our rich history,” says Streckenbach. “With Brown County being named after Jacob Jennings Brown, who fought in the War of 1812, Pamperin Park was the perfect location because of it’s important historical role in being where the lumber mill for Fort Howard was located.”
The 250th SAR Liberty Tree Program was first launched back in 2023 with the goal of planting 250 Liberty Trees before July 4, 2026, with at least one tree in each state. The Pamperin Park Liberty Tree has a dedication plaque educating the public about the American Revolution and the sacrifices made to form our nation.
“The original Liberty Tree was in Boston, Massachusetts, and served as a rallying point for the growing resistance to the rule of Britain,” says Robert Haglund, National Trustee for the Wisconsin SAR and Chair of the Wisconsin SAR 250 Commission. “The first act of resistance was in protest to the Stamp Act which taxed every paper used. This affected everyone, including the working class. This dedication of the Liberty Tree, at the site of the lumber mill that provided the lumber needed to build Fort Howard, is a tribute to the workers.”
