SOUTHWEST WISCONSIN — It was a big week for the growing campaign to stop Dairyland Power
Cooperative’s plan to build gigantic 756 kV transmission lines through the heart of the driftless in Vernon
and Crawford Counties. On Monday, October 12th, the Coalition Against MariBel 765, Inc. (CAM 765)
hosted a call to action at the shelter at Genoa Park at 405 Water Street in Genoa, WI. Elected officials
present included Viroqua mayor Krista Browne, Representative Tara Johnson, Wisconsin Representative
candidate Jim Green, Wisconsin senate candidate Jenna Jacobson, and United States Congressman
Derrick Van Orden.
On Tuesday the 13th, hundreds of activists opposing the 765 kV lines descended on the Wisconsin Capitol
to encourage lawmakers to take action to stop the invasion of Wisconsin by 765 kV lines.
At 4:30 elected officials and candidates were invited to speak. One of the strongest statements against the
proposed 765 kV lines through the Driftless came from Derrick Van Orden. Before a crowd of activists and
reporters, Van Orden stated “I will not allow these companies to destroy the most beautiful place in
the entire planet so that they can move wind energy from North Dakota to Illinois. … So I’m deadly
serious. When I tell you I’m standing with you, I’m standing with you … I am your congressman, and
I will fight for you in Washington, D.C. to make sure these things never happen in the Driftless.
Thank you. God bless you guys.”
Tim Woodhouse, the president of the Coalition Against Maribel stated: “Representative Tara Johnson and
Congressman Derrick Van Orden have really become the champions of our movement. There are many
others who are supporting us, but they have been at almost all of our events and have put in an amount of
time and effort that is above and beyond anything that we ever expected. Thank you, Tara Johnson; thank
you Derrick Van Orden!”
The Coalition Against Maribel 765, Inc. is a grassroots corporation of concerned landowners fighting the
massive, proposed 765-kV MariBell transmission line through the Driftless region of southwest Wisconsin.
