MADISON, WI – Dane County Executive Melissa Agard today proclaimed April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Dane County, joining the Dane County Board of Supervisors in recognizing this important month and encouraging residents to support survivors and take action to prevent sexual violence in our community.
Sexual violence continues to affect individuals and families across the country. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, based on national survey data, approximately 81% of women and 43% of men report experiencing some form of sexual harassment or assault in their lifetime. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also shows that nearly half of women and more than 1 in 6 men experience contact sexual violence during their lifetime.
“Sexual Assault Awareness Month is a time to stand with survivors and reaffirm our shared responsibility to create a safer, more respectful community,” said County Executive Agard. “At a moment when public trust has been shaken by sexual misconduct allegations involving leaders from both political parties, it is critical that we lead with integrity. Speaking out, supporting survivors, and demanding accountability must remain non-negotiable, no matter who is involved.”
Sexual violence includes a wide range of behaviors, from harassment to assault, and impacts people of all backgrounds. In many cases, the person responsible is someone the survivor knows. In Dane County, local service providers support hundreds of residents each year, many of them young people, as they navigate the aftermath of these experiences.
Throughout April, residents are encouraged to participate in Sexual Assault Awareness Month by wearing teal, sharing resources, and engaging in conversations that help break down stigma and promote understanding.
“Everyone deserves to feel safe in their daily lives,” Agard said. “Preventing sexual violence requires all of us to be engaged – listening, learning, and taking meaningful steps to support one another and address the root causes of harm.”
