WISCONSIN – Today, Mayor Tom Barrett joined the Democracy Defense Project – Wisconsin board to support their mission to promote the safety and security of Wisconsin Elections.

Mayor Barrett’s public policy career is extensive and includes positions at the state, federal, local, and international level. Beginning in the state legislature as a state representative and state senator, he was then elected to the United States Congress where he served five terms. After his time in Washington, he returned home to serve as mayor of Milwaukee, winning five elections in the state’s largest city. Most recently, he represented the United States as Ambassador to Luxembourg for three years.

Mayor Barrett, an attorney, graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School. Upon graduation he clerked for the Honorable Robert Warren of the federal eastern district of Wisconsin.

Mayor Barrett joins three other members of the bipartisan Democracy Defense Project – Wisconsin board – Republicans former Attorney General JB Van Hollen and former U.S. Rep. Scott Klug as well as former Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate.

“It is a privilege to share my voice and experience on an issue as critically important as the integrity of Wisconsin elections,”
said Mayor Barrett in a statement. “Wisconsin has shown time and time again that we are no stranger to close elections, and yet our election workers, poll watchers, and administrators handle their duties with skill, precision, and transparency. Wisconsin elections can be a model for the nation, and I look forward to working with the Democracy Defense Project to highlight exactly why.”

“We couldn’t be happier to have a public servant with a record as distinguished as Tom Barrett’s join our fight against misinformation surrounding Wisconsin elections,”
said DDP-WI Board member Scott Klug. “Across the country, we’re entering a critical moment where efforts to push back against the falsehoods in the election space. DDP will continue that work and with advocates like Tom Barret joining our ranks, Wisconsin is in good hands.”
