MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin’s state-chartered banks reported sound financial performance through the second quarter of 2026, according to data released today by the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions (DFI). As of June 30, 2026, there were 114 state-chartered commercial banks serving Wisconsin residents.
Total assets for Wisconsin’s state-chartered banks stood at $75.2 billion through June 30, 2026, up from $71.5 billion reported on June 30, 2025. The net interest margin improved to 3.77% compared to 3.47% in June 2026. Net loans increased by 5.75% to $55.1 billion, up by $3 billion over the same time.
In the 12 months ending on June 30, 2026:
- The capital ratio strengthened to 10.81%, an increase from 10.31% in June 2025;
- The past due ratio rose to 1.06% from 0.99% in June 2025;
- Net operating income improved to $504.5 million compared to $392.5 million in June 2025;
- The return on average assets ratio expanded to 1.35% from 1.11% in June 2025; and
- Bank liquidity remained stable, with only a slight increase in the loans to assets ratio to 73.27% compared to 72.88% in June 2025.
“Through the second quarter, continued growth in earnings and capital has contributed to overall financial stability within Wisconsin’s state-chartered banks,” said DFI Division of Banking Administrator Kim Swissdorf. “Although past due metrics have risen modestly, the improvements to earnings and capital, along with stable liquidity levels, provide additional protection against potential future credit risk, and continue to support Wisconsin’s communities and businesses.”
